Divemaster & Assistant Instructor Training
 

Pre-requisites

To enter in the Divemasteror Assistant Instructor training program, you need to meet the following requirements:
- have a minimum of 20 logged divers
- Rescue Diver certification with a recognized agency (note: NAUI does not recognize SDI certifications)
- valid CPR/First Aid training certificate within the last 2 years

If you do not meet these requirements, please contact us - we can work out a package for you that lets you complete the pre-requisites and then go on to the DM/AI program.

Course Options

You can choose one of the following 3 certification options in this training:
- NAUI: Master Diver + Divemaster + Assistant Instructor
- PADI: Divemaster
- SSI: DiveControl Specialist (DM + AI)

If you want, you can also cross over and get certified with two or more agencies at a very nominal price - this greatly improves your professional qualifications and improves your chances of getting a job, in this highly competitive market.

Training Options

If you are a very experienced diver (hundreds of dives), you can choose to do just the bare-bones curriculum - aka, Course Only. In this course, we will cover all the content and requirements laid down by the appropriate agency and certainly, you will earn your qualification as a dive professional by meeting and exceeding the standards defined by that agency.

However, our recommendation is that you choose to go in for the Internship option. Look at it this way - unlike most recreational certifications, where the training is quite binary (you either learn a skill or you don't), professional training involves a lot of grey areas and areas of continual improvement. For example, learning how to lead a dive is not a binary skill - one that you know or don't know. With some agencies, you can get certified as a dive professional having led all of 1 (yes, one - uno, solo, ichi) dive. We don't want to debate the merits of that - however, we do feel that with a lot of DM skills, the more time you spend practising them, the better you get at them.

That is where the internship comes in. Here, you are working as a member of the dive shop and actually get to do all the things that a dive professional does - but under the guidance of other instructors and DMs, so that you can learn and gain experience in a "real" environment, but with support and advice always available to you.

Our internship differs from a lot of other internships in one way - we do not take on DM Trainees as a source of cheap labor. You will not be doing manual work like loading/unloading the boat, washing and packing gear, sweeping the dive shop, etc. You will, instead, be working with the DMs and instructors, helping them with their day to day tasks. This way, you will learn not only the core content of the curriculum, but also accelerate the learning that comes from experience - you will learn not only from your experiences, but those of the other dive pros around you.

Our goal with the program is not to create a cookie-cutter clone of a particular instructor - after all, what works for one instructor may not work for you. Our goal is to help you develop your own leadership style, and gain the skills, experience and confidence to apply it as a dive professional who is a credit to the industry.

Keep in mind one thing - paying your fees does not guarantee that you will get your card. You are paying for the training - the certification, on the other hand, has to be earned. It is going to be hard work - you will be challenged and you will be pushed to (and sometimes, seemingly beyond) your limits. That is not to say that this is boot camp. Diving is ultimately about having fun, and we like to think that most of our DMTs have a great time here. But this program is not for those who want to do minimal effort and/or party every night till sunrise. You are training to become a dive professional - other people's lives will be in your hand. We take that VERY seriously and so should you. Consequently, we put in a lot of commitment to training you, and we expect you to match that commitment.
