Reading the Reef
What looks like a singular reef is actually made of many species of corals, each with its own structure, growth patterns, and specific role within the ecosystem. The SSI Coral Identification Specialty is an introduction to these complex living systems.
From understanding how corals form colonies, compete for resources, to their organized formation over a period of time, you’ll take a closer look at the living landscapes that define the Ocean. You’ll begin to recognise common coral species and the features that set them apart. There’s additional emphasis on understanding how changing conditions affect these underwater architects, adding relevant context to their current state of being. The outcome – you’ll realise that these reefs are so much more than what meets the eye.

Reading the Reef
Prerequisites:
- Finishing reading your course material is mandatory BEFORE you arrive.
- That’s it! This Specialty Course is for anyone and everyone who wants to know more about the Ocean.
Medical Form:
Before you dive, you’ll need to fill out a medical questionnaire. It is a self-check of your eligibility to dive.
If you do need a doctor’s clearance, we will guide you through it! Download the form now.
Age Limitations:
- The Ocean doesn’t do age brackets for those who wish to learn about her deeply.
Price:
- We have three levels of pricing basis the type of course delivery:
- Self-study, a.k.a. course material only: ₹5,000
- Course material + a quick class: ₹7,500
- Course material + an in-depth session: ₹10,000

- We’ve got the essentials covered – study material, instructor charges, certification, and taxes.
- Travel, meals, & stay are additional expenses.

If this is a dry course, do I really need to come to the Andamans to do it?
- No, not really. The beauty of this course is how flexible it is.
- The theory session can definitely be done over a video call.
Can I add dives to this course? I want to dive with my Instructor…
- Yes, of course. While it is not necessary to dive to complete this course, it is definitely possible – basis schedule and availability.
- Fun dives will be charged additionally to the course
- If you wish to dive with the Instructor who taught you the Marine Ecology course, talk to us and we’ll help figure & plan your DIVEDays.
Where do I access my course material?
- On the SSI App – your forever dive buddy. Available on Android & iOS. Phones & tablets. Or even a good ol’ browser.
- Theory, logs, certifications cards…this is your diver flex app, essentially!
Can I postpone the class with the Instructor? If not, what is the cancellation policy?
- Here are the not-so-fun details, only applicable if you have NOT accessed the course material:
- Cancel one month prior, and you get a full refund.
- Two weeks prior? 50% refund.
- Less than a week? No refund, unfortunately.
- If you have, there refund will be calculated after deducting the amount for the course material.
- Point being – this is better dealt with on a case-to-case basis. Let’s talk!
