ONE BREATH TAKES YOU A LONG WAY
Using minimal gear will feel unfamiliar at first, only to soon become intuition. Your breath guides you, your body follows, and the Ocean indeed becomes the place where you belong!
ONE BREATH TAKES YOU A LONG WAY
Using minimal gear will feel unfamiliar at first, only to soon become intuition. Your breath guides you, your body follows, and the Ocean indeed becomes the place where you belong!
Freediving 101
When you leave all the heavy gear behind and work with only the basics – mask, fins, and snorkel – you feel a difference. As your breath steadies and your movements streamline, the Ocean begins to feel closer. The SSI Freediver course is designed to hold your hand through that shift.
Over three days of theory, stretching, breathwork, and training sessions in the pool & open water, you’ll learn to understand your body’s response to depth & pressure. There’s no set number of dives. Your progress is measured over hour-long sessions and skills practice. While you only have to reach 10 metres to get certified, you can dive up to 20 metres post-certification. At the end of the day though, it’s not about depth. It’s about understanding the deeper connection between the Ocean and your breath.

Do I need to be a certified SCUBA Diver to sign up for any freediving course?
- No, it’s not a prerequisite.
- Freediving and Scuba are two different disciplines and don’t depend on each other.
- Think of it as a different way of being underwater: quieter, slower, and refreshingly gear-light.
Will I be taught any breathing exercises before the training?
- Yes, absolutely. Breathing is at the heart of freediving, and it’s built right into the course.
- And worry not, you’ll be guided through every second of it.
Does this course happen in a swimming pool?
- Only the confined session can be conducted in a pool, but it doesn’t have to.
- You will most likely train in calm, shallow waters by the shore, which is the recommended trajectory.
- The open-water sessions will have to be done in the Ocean, keeping depth limitations in mind.
What is the difference between the Pool Freediver and the Freediver course?
- Think of Pool Freediver as the gentle introduction, and Freediver as the full experience.
- Pool Freediver is a pool-only certification focused on learning the basics in shallow depths. It’s perfect if you’re curious, but don’t want to dive deep just yet.
- The Freediver course, on the other hand, takes you into open water. It’s a complete certification that includes skill training and deeper dives.
- And if you start with Pool Freediver, you can always upgrade to Freediver later by completing the open-water sessions.
What do I pack for a dive trip?
- Bring the basics: a quick-dry towel, sun-protective clothing, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle.
- Missed the basics? We have a DIVEShop – our retail store – which takes care of most diving essentials
- As for sunscreen, use reef-safe ones, BUT they aren’t exactly diver-friendly. Ask a diver friend why. Or, us 🙂
Where do I access my course material?
- On the SSI App – your forever dive buddy. Available on Android & iOS. Phones & tablets. Or even a good ol’ browser.
- Theory, logs, certifications cards… this is your diver flex app, essentially!
